Wolverhampton Wanderers were keen on signing Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi but weren’t able to get the deal over the line.
The centre-back’s contract expires in 2024 and Gladbach managing director Roland Virkus had admitted his side wanted to sell him in the last window.
Today’s Rheinische Post points out Wolves were interested and were involved in ‘quite serious discussions’ over a deal for the 26-year-old.
It’s claimed the offer tabled by Gary O’Neil’s side ‘wasn’t right’ and they ‘finally stopped communicating’, likely with the German club. The fee proposed by Wolves isn’t mentioned in the report.
“I never really wanted to leave the club. Sure, I looked around to see if something was coming because I only have one year left on my contract. But now I’m here, I’m happy too, I’m looking forward to the season and I’ll give 100% for Borussia,” Rheinische Post quoted him as saying.
Mönchengladbach manager Gerardo Seoane has admitted his side will sit down with Elvedi in the next few days to discuss his future.
With regards to the renewal talks, the player said: “The starting position is known. I’ll let everything sink in now and then start the talks.”
Should Gladbach fail to tie Elvedi down to a new contract before the end of this year, the report states the door could open for him to change clubs in January. If that happens, it remains to be seen whether Wolves will still be interested in him.
