A couple of days ago, reports from Portugal said Wolverhampton Wanderers were close to signing Ruben Semedo from Olympiacos.
When writing about the chances of a transfer, we couldn’t avoid mentioning that the defender was once considered a player with big potential, and his career had a big setback following his arrest in Spain.
Now the Portuguese media is back with more reports, this time claiming Wolves and Olympiacos reached an agreement for the transfer. The problem is that his criminal record may stop the move.
That’s something said by newspapers Record and O Jogo.
Record writes that Olympiacos and Wolves ‘had an agreement’ and the negotiations were in the ‘advanced stages’, but the Premier League side acknowledged that it’d be difficult to get him a work permit.
O Jogo rules out the move as well, claiming ‘it won’t become a reality’. They point out that ‘Wolves’ interest exists’, but the ‘legal procedures’ will stop the transfer.
Semedo was arrested in Spain in 2018 for ‘kidnapping, threatening and assault’. He was initially sentenced to five years in jail, but had the conviction suspended and was released after five months.
He’s still expected to leave Olympiacos this summer.
