Despite the initial excitement for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ alleged pursuit of Benfica youngster João Carvalho, it seems that the situation had a drastic change in the past few days.

Carvalho had been unhappy with his little playing time in Portugal, and that was the perfect opportunity for other clubs to make an offer, which was said to be the case with Wolves.

But now things are different, with the youngster having a few chances in the past few games, including Wednesday’s important derby against Sporting.

That’s why today, newspaper A Bola reports that despite the expectation for a departure in January, Benfica now have other plans for him.

They claim that manager Rui Vitória could now use Carvalho as a ‘serious alternative’ for Pizzi, making him much more important for the squad than he was a few months ago.

So even though he had his ‘bags packed’ to go, the current situation makes it very unlikely that his departure from Lisbon will be easy.

That’s probably that for Wolves then.
