One of the first points AS Roma are looking to address to help José Mourinho is the goalkeeper position.
Dissatisfied by Pau Lopez, the club are looking around Europe for someone new between the sticks, and the general belief is that Jorge Mendes is going to help them out.
That’s why Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Rui Patricio was immediately linked with a move to Serie A the day after Mourinho was announced as the future Roma manager, and it’s exactly why his name is still doing the rounds to this day.
Calciomercato have their take on it on Thursday, explaining that the likes of Yann Sommer have been pushed as alternatives to the too expensive David De Gea.
However, it’s the Wolves goalkeeper’s that is the ‘most advanced’ of the lot, as he has ‘rich international experience’ and would ‘cost little given his 2022 contract’, with a figure of €8-10m touted as a potential fee.
Capitalising on the opportunity to get Patricio would then allow the club owners to spread out their budget for ‘other open roles in the squad’, while waiting to sell Pau Lopez next season to ‘then bet on a younger goalkeeper’.
It seems the Wolverhampton veteran would be nothing more than a stop gap, but it would also allow him to experience something new before edging towards the twilight years of his career as a shot stopper.
