Benfica will be forced to sell striker Goncalo Ramos if they receive an offer of €40m from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
That’s according Jornal de Noticias, who say there is no guarantee that the 21-year-old will remain with the Portuguese side this summer.
They explain that Benfica coach Roger Schmidt has made it clear he wants the player to remain at the club having been ‘pleased and impressed’ with his performances so far.
He’s therefore been ‘putting pressure on the continuity’ of the player, considering Ramos a key player for his plans this season. That’s something he’s even made clear to his ‘closest circle’.
However, there is ‘no guarantee’ that Ramos will be staying as Benfica are at the ‘mercy of the laws of the market’ and if a €40m bid were to arrive they’d likely sell.
Indeed, Wolves boss Bruno Lage was asked about the player directly in his pre-match press conference yesterday, something that has been covered by A Bola, O Jogo and Record today.
The first says that Schmidt ‘may be deprived’ of Ramos because of the interest in him, with ‘several inquiries’ having already been made.
Wolves are among those who are keen because of Lage, who knows the player from his time in charge at Benfica and remains a big fan of him.
O Jogo, meanwhile, simply cover comments from Lage denying a bid has been made while Record say Wolves have ‘set their sights’ on the 21-year-old. However, they can only try for a loan move at this moment in time.
The stance in Portugal, though, is that Wolves are very much interested in adding another Portuguese player to their contingent even if Lage has tried to pull things back with his comments.
