Every time a Portuguese manager is appointed to take charge of a club from abroad, their home country media makes a big deal out of it. Especially when the destination is England.
Nuno Espírito Santo was officially announced by Wolves yesterday, and this morning, A Bola already had a big story about the job he will have in the Championship.
They’ve managed to speak to Silvio, the Portuguese defender who joined Wolves last summer – and already has a lot to tell the club’s new boss.
“Besides being very long, it’s a very competitive league,” Sílvio told A Bola. “It happens that on Saturday you beat the club on top of the table and on Tuesday play against the last and lose.”
Despite claiming that many Championship clubs play old fashioned football, he says there are still teams doing something different and being rewarded for it.
“It’s a league that’s very different to the Portuguese or even the Premier League, you see teams with a more direct football, but the teams that are up there are those who have more ball possession and try to play the best football.
“Whoever plays well is always closer to winning. Benitez’s Newcastle played better than others and were promoted. Carvalhal’s team also play very well, he’s doing a great job.”
Speaking of the qualities within the Wolves squad, Silvio said: “It’s not that they don’t have it, but the more the better.” And already warned the manager he’ll want to work on improvements: “I’ve never worked with Nuno but he did a great job at Rio Ave, started very well at Valencia, fought for the title until the end with Porto and I trust he will do good work. I believe that when he gets to know the club’s reality he will want to make some changes.”
Silvio signed a one-year contract last summer, and A Bola claims he ‘hasn’t ruled out’ the option to extend it for a further one.
Nuno Espírito Santo seems to already be working on the improvements mentioned by Silvio, and was already linked to Portuguese players even before being announced by the club.
