Wolverhampton Wanderers missed out on a move for Jerome Boateng this summer as they were ‘outplayed’ by Lyon in the race for his signature.
That’s according to BILD journalist Christian Falk, who says the Premier League side didn’t do enough to convince the German.
Boateng was a free agent this summer after leaving Bayern Munich and, given his experience and availability, was linked to several teams around Europe.
He eventually settled on a move to Lyon, joining the Ligue 1 side on a two-year deal after ten years in Germany.
It seems they were not the only ones interested, though, with Falk covering the situation today when asked about efforts made by Wolves.
“Well, Lyon was not Jerome Boateng’s first choice,“ he said.
“But in the end, it wasn’t quite enough from Wanderers, and Lyon outplayed them, so there was a clear winner here.“
Falk doesn’t mention the nature of the talks or the offer from Wolves, but it seems they didn’t offer enough to convince the 33-year-old this summer.
That’s surprising as it’s rare to hear of a Premier League side being outbid by a French side, unless it’s PSG, of course.
Perhaps it was a case of Lyon being able to offer European football, even if it is the Europa League, something Bruno Lage’s side cannot do following a disappointing 2020-21 campaign.
