Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United may well be the saga of the summer, and one which ends in absolutely nothing, but Wolves fans have had their own.
Step forward Mr Matheus Nunes, who is today again linked to Wolves, but also Chelsea and Liverpool.
For well over a month the Sporting midfielder has been linked with a move to Bruno Lage’s side, despite many, perhaps even the player himself, feeling the midfielder could aim for higher things.
It was the carrot of signing Nunes which made losing out on Palhinha to Fulham bearable, even if many Wolves fans still had serious doubts the transfer would happen.
Saturday’s edition of Correio da Manhã states: ‘CM knows that the player is ready to take the leap and will do everything to leave, although he has not put any pressure on the club to release him.’
Whilst that may sound contradictory, what they mean is he’ll do everything he can to convince interested clubs, and it’s explained he’s been a highlight of Sporting’s preseason so far.
CM further state: ‘The leonine midfielder is body and soul in Alvalade, but believes that at any moment the proposal that should take him to England can arrive. None of the suitors have given up on hiring him yet. Bruno Lage’s Wolverhampton were joined by Chelsea and more recently Liverpool.’
Once again it’s stated the Lisbon side want €45m plus €5m in bonuses, with a chunk paid upfront.
Of course, it’s repeated that Jorge Mendes is the man trying to collect offers.
Don’t rule out the agent trying to push Ruben Neves to Manchester United should the De Jong saga die, and then freeing up Wolves money for Nunes.
