Former Everton winger Royston Drenthe has told the Dutch media his time with the Premier League side started to convince him he no longer wanted to be in the game. The former Real Madrid player spent a season at Everton on loan from the Spanish side.

Voetbal Primeur have reported on comments Drenthe made in which he revealed it was after his spell with Everton that he knew was done with football. The Dutchman realised the game wasn’t what he expected, and came to the conclusion that everybody looked after themselves. Drenthe thinks the pressure became too much for him, which eventually led to his recent retirement.

“I was actually done after Everton. I did not then plan to go into music, but I thought the world of football was dirty. It’s a dirty world where everyone thinks of themselves. I’ve been through too much,” said the former Everton player.

Drenthe played over twenty league games for Everton during his loan period during the 2011/12 season. The 29-year-old did show some signs of what he could be bring to Everton, but a run-in with David Moyes and inconsistency blighted his time with the Premier League club.
