It’s probably safe to say that Bruno Guimarães is quite satisfied with the first few months he’s been having at Newcastle United.
When joining the Magpies in a €42m move from Lyon back in January, the club were risking being relegated to the Championship, where they’d have quite a setback in their big plans for the coming seasons.
Newcastle, however, managed to have a great sequence since then, and can now rest assured that they’ll be playing the Premier League next season. That’s one of the subjects commented on by the Brazilian in an interview with ESPN he had this week.
“We have already achieved our main objective which was to get Newcastle out of relegation,” Guimarães told ESPN Brasil.
“We made 43 points, we are in ninth place and we had a historic sprint. With the new owners, the project for next season is very interesting. A beautiful story begins.”
“It was a difficult adaptation, completely different. It’s the hardest league in the world, without a doubt. The first two weeks were very difficult, but I had confidence in the coach. He talked to me a lot, said he wanted me to understand how the Premier League works, he wanted me to start some games on the bench.
“It was good for my adaptation, even at the beginning without understanding much, because when you arrive, you already want to play anyway. And with me it was no different. He told me I was going to play, he asked me to calm down, he told me to talk to everyone.”
Now looking forward to a bright future, the Brazilian talked about the Magpies’ aspirations for the upcoming seasons.
“We want to get into the top six. Fight for the Europa League, maybe for the Champions League. We know that it won’t be overnight that you will become a top seven, you have to prove it on a daily basis, in the tournaments, but we hope for the best. I hope we can form a great team, it will depend on the reinforcements, who will arrive, who will leave. I’m very optimistic, I hope we can fight for the Europa League, maybe Champions League.”
