AS Roma were looking to close the deal to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling last week, but they have still not been able to get the deal over the line after several months of negotiations.

The Italian club have been trying to reach an agreement with the Red Devils, causing much frustration.

On October 4th, Gianluca Di Marzio reported the Serie A side have made a new offer worth €15m and it was likely to be their final attempt to sign the 30-year-old.

It was also suggested the Old Trafford club will consider Giallorossi’s latest proposal carefully.

Calciomercato provides the latest development on this ongoing saga and explains Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ‘accept’ Roma’s offer for the former Fulham man.

Paulo Fonseca has publicly expressed his desire to have Smalling back at his disposal after the player impressed during his loan stay last season.

The central defender, who is ‘one step away’ from returning to the Stadio Olimpico, is waiting for United to give the green light to complete a move to Roma.

Jozo Palac was leading the group of intermediaries, and Guido Fienga and vice-president Ryan Friedkin were leading the Roma delegation, and the two parties combined were able to close the deal with United.

There was ‘white smoke’ on Sunday evening after the Premier League club accepted Roma’s €15m offer to sanction Smalling’s sale.
