Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu is captain of the Spain U21 side, and has been speaking to the media following their 5-0 victory over Estonia’s U21 team.

The match was a succesful one for Spain, and it brought to an end their qualifying group for next year’s European U21 Championship in Poland. However, because Sweden beat Croatia 4-2, it was they who finished top rather than Spain.

As Sweden progress automatically, Spain will have to go through a playoff, but Everton’s Deulofeu explained they’re confident and there’s not too much worry in the camp.

Quoted by El Confidencial, Deulofeu explained: “We’ve done our job (beating Estonia 5-0) but it hasn’t happened. Sweden has beaten Croatia and now we’re going to play in the playoffs. We do not know our rival yet but we’re very strong and we are confident that we will be in the European Championship.”

Had Sweden not beaten Croatia then Spain could have qualified directly, but in the end they lost out due to their 3-0 defeat to Croatia in March. Sweden didn’t lose a single game in their qualifying campaign, winning 7 and drawing three.
