Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez hasn’t had a great time in the Colombian national team lately. The mistakes made by him were a reason for heavy criticism from fans and media, and that’s why he stayed on the bench in the last three rounds of the World Cup qualifiers.
Now it turns out that with other defenders missing out in the squad, including Everton’s Yerry Mina, manager Reinaldo Rueda will have no other choice but to include the Spurs player in the team that will face Brazil on Thursday night.
And instead of showing concern about it, the Colombian media has actually been very supportive of him. It started this week with Copa America winner Andrés Orozco questioning the treatment the Tottenham player has been getting in his home country.
“We’ve been a bit unfair with Davinson Sanchez, who in his stay with the national team has done more good things than bad. We’re in a culture in which we go more into error, but he’s given Colombia a guarantee,” Orozco told Gol Caracol.
Marca features a story with a headline saying ‘Davinson, Colombia needs you’.
They explain the whole situation which will force the defender to start in such an important match, and show their support for a player who’s been needing it.
“About Sanchez there are many criticisms for his last performances, in which he has had errors that brushed against the blooper. In addition, he’s not had a good time with Spurs and barely has 367 minutes in the season.
“Despite the recent image that he has left, Dao arrived at the Colombian national team with a letter of security and to be the renewal along with Yerry Mina. He has shown this in the qualifying matches against Russia and in the World Cup itself.”
Colombia are currently fourth in the World Cup qualifying table, from which four teams get a straight spot and the fifth goes to the play-offs. They’re now playing Brazil and Paraguay in this international break.
