As you might have guessed from the moment the story emerged, Dimitri Payet’s alleged return to West Ham hasn’t exactly been taken seriously in France.
Despite the Guardian reporting the France international would be interested in a return to the club he left under rather poisonous circumstances, RMC Sport aren’t so convinced.
The French media outlet reported over the weekend the news of a transfer to the Hammers was met with ‘astonishment’ within the Ligue 1 club, even going as far as making a few board members laugh out loud.
While they aren’t convinced Dimitri Payet actually wants to leave the south of France anytime soon, what they do suspect is that it could be something to do with his wages, despite him already being the best paid player at the club.
The reason for that is the potential arrival of Mario Balotelli from Nice, who has been negotiating a €800k/month salary, which is quite a lot more than the former West Ham star’s current package of around €500k/month.
RMC Sport state Payet ‘hasn’t been hiding’ wanting a pay rise to get closer to the Italian’s potential new wages.
This makes a lot more sense.
