West Ham United could be a top four team if they were to play in any other league in the world rather than the Premier League.

That’s according to Sporting Director Mark Noble, who has been speaking to Turkish outlet Fanatik regarding his club and their status in the game.

West Ham are one of England’s oldest clubs, having been formed all the way back in June 1985, 128 years ago.

They have a storied history, to say the least, winning the FA Cup three times, the European Cup Winners Cup and Intertoto Cup once and then the UEFA Europa Conference League last year.

They have never been, though, one of the more successful clubs within England, having only ever won the second division title, in 1958 and 1981 respectively.

The invention of the Premier League has proven to be tricky for them, with the Hammers highest ever finish in the league coming in 1998/99 when they finished fifth under Harry Redknapp.

The highest they’ve been since that point was sixth under David Moyes in 2020/21, although the Scot does have them in fourth following a strong start to this campaign that’s seen them pick up 10 points from 12.

Whether they can remain there for the remainder of the season remains to be seen and Noble believes that it would be far more likely if they were playing in another country.

“It means a lot to me that West Ham won that European trophy last season,” he said.

“Even though it coincided with a period when I quit football, this success of my club made me very happy. West Ham is a big club and has great fan support.

“It is not easy to compete in the Premier League. A place where a large economy revolves. Maybe if West Ham played in a different league, they would easily play in the top four.”
