West Ham United are set to have their say on midfielder Edson Álvarez as he recovers from an injury with the Mexican national team.

That’s according to Reporte Índigo, who cover comments from manager Jaime Lozano regarding how the decision on the midfielder’s recovery will have to involve West Ham.

Álvarez was set to be a key player for Mexico at Copa América this summer but is currently facing the prospect of missing the entire tournament thanks to an injury picked up in the clash with Jamaica.

He was stretchered off early in that game with initial indications that he’d suffered a hamstring injury and the West Ham man later seen using crutches.

It was then explained that while he had ditched the crutches there had still not been a full diagnosis on the injury as the swelling was preventing Mexico’s medical team from doing the required scans.

Lozano now reports that Álvarez wants to remain with the national team for the coming weeks, but West Ham will have their say on the matter first.

“If he leaves, it is a significant loss,” Lozano said.

“It’s a hard blow. He has expressed that he wants to stay in the group, we’ll see. I don’t know if the decision is entirely ours or his, his club will also have a lot of weight.”
