West Ham United travel to Chelsea on Monday for a Premier League battle, and it has big importance despite being relatively early in the season.

Should David Moyes’ side win then they’ll go above the Blues, and plunge Frank Lampard into inevitable negativity around his future at Stamford Bridge. A win for Chelsea would see they climb up the table and overtake Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

Ahead of the match, Angelo Ogbonna has been speaking to France Football, and he was asked if West Ham versus Chelsea is really a special match, given it’s one of several London derbies.

Ogbonna suggested, that as football battles in the capital go, it’s the Tottenham tie which means more to the Hammers: “All London derbies are of great value to players and supporters. Of course, historically, tradition has it that the one against Tottenham has that extra soul. Personally, it is precisely two derbies against Spurs that are at the top of my mind. There is of course the 3-3 on their ground this season. And the 1-0 success in a full Tottenham stadium two seasons ago.”

The Italian has been in good form this season, and when asked if he’s currently enjoying the best football of his career, Ogbonna said: “It’s possible. But individual performance emerges more when the team’s results are there, when the mechanisms are well oiled. Not to mention the trust that others have in you. The confidence of the coach, too, who pushes us to try things, to take our chance in front of the opposing goal. What I do more and more.”

Quizzed on his future, the 32-year-old, who has a contract lasting until June 2022, made it clear he’s very happy where he is: “Football is unpredictable. And you never know what the future will hold. What I can say is that today I feel good in this country. I blossomed here. I extended until 2022 and I could see myself continuing there for quite a while, if possible by winning a trophy with West Ham.”

A trophy would be a great way to round off a West Ham career, which started with a 2015 move from Juventus.
