Javier Hernandez has had a mixed time since signing for West Ham in the summer 2017 transfer window.
He contributed eight Premier League goals in his first season with the Hammers and has a further seven for this campaign. Certainly not an undisputed starter, his goal ratio isn’t so bad, but he doesn’t offer an awful lot to Manuel Pellegrini’s side overall.
That’s why he’s been in and out of the team, along with niggling fitness issues, and it’s also been a problem for the striker at previous clubs.
The 30 year old has a contract at West Ham until June 2020 but there’s been rumours of a possible summer exit.
Mexico take part in the Gold Cup in June and it would have been a chance for Hernandez to push his standing higher at home again, but he won’t be going.
Fox Sports Mexico say the footballer has asked to be excused from the tournament, being held in the US, Costa Rica and Jamaica, because he’s set to become a father for the first time.
That may not go down well in Mexico, with Hernandes at times having a prickly relationship with the country’s fans. As well as concentrating on the baby, it will be easier for the player to study transfer options in Europe.
