Despite having never played an official tournament for the national team before, it seems West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini could end up having a chance to make it to the 2018 World Cup squad with Argentina.
The 24-year-old has only two caps for his country, both last year, when he played friendlies in June against Brazil and Singapore. But now Jorge Sampaoli has been following his season closely, as reported by newspaper Olé on Monday.
The outlet claims that the national team manager has been watching several games in Europe, and West Ham’s 4-1 win over Huddersfield on Saturday was one of them.
Lanzini scored a brace in that game, so it was a pretty good presentation to the boss who should have a final list for the World Cup soon.
Olé also claims that after the match, Lanzini and Sampaoli still had a meeting in London, before the manager head to Liverpool on Sunday to watch the Reds’ game against Manchester City.
With players often wanting to switch sides to find clubs with more exposure where they will be noticed by national team managers, it’s good news for West Ham fans that Lanzini isn’t being forgotten there.
