There are dreams, and then there are “dreams”.
We’ll let you decide which one Javier Hernandez’s belief that Mexico can win the World Cup falls under, but the West Ham striker is definitely confident his country can pull off an amazing upset in Russia next summer.
Speaking to Univision Deportes, relayed by Record in Mexico, the Hammers’ forward said: “We want to be world champions, and we’ll try, we don’t want to place limits. Many people will say that we’re not being realistic, but the reality is that people who don’t dream or aspire to more each time are maybe those that are confused”.
Strong words from the Mexico star, who first burst onto the world scene with some strong performances at the 2010 World Cup, a few weeks after Manchester United announced they had signed him out of the blue.
Of course, it would take a lot for his national team to pull the feat off, but stranger things have happened in international tournaments.
Remember Greece winning the 2004 Euros?
Signed from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for £16m in the hope he would solve West Ham’s long standing striker problem, the 29-year-old hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype, finding the back of the net just seven times in 29 appearances this season.
