One story we didn’t cover few days ago because it originated in England was West Ham readying a £15m bid for Lyon’s centre-back Marcelo Guedes.

Foot Mercato picked up on it a few hours later, claiming the Brazilian defender would be ‘tempted by an experience in England’ after enjoying a very positive season last year in Ligue 1.

Well, according to Le Progres on Wednesday, West Ham have made an offer for the 31-year-old, which has disrupted the player’s mindset somewhat.

According to them, the offer from the Hammers has not left him ‘indifferent’, especially the wages the Premier League side were prepared to offer him.

This suggests that while no official offer has been made to Lyon for the player, West Ham might have, via an agent, managed to inform Marcelo of the personal terms waiting for him in London.

Whether Marcelo is just an alternative to Fabian Balbuena or is a target to complement the Paraguayan defender and new arrival Issa Diop remains to be seen, but with Winston Reid and Angelo Ogbonna already at the club, does Manuel Pellegrini really need five experienced centre-backs?
