Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte brings today a mix of good and bad news for any West Ham fans who expect the club to sign Gustavo Cuellar.

Let’s start with the good. Despite recent claims saying the Hammers would be paying €30m to sign the midfielder, the website has some information which makes it sound very unlikely.

They say Flamengo are pretty aware that no one will trigger Cuellar’s €70m release clause, and would negotiate with clubs who present an offer of around €10m.

Globo Esporte are a very reliable website, so there’s something wrong about those first claims. Either West Ham are offering too much, or the bid wasn’t true.

About the bid not being true, Globo Esporte also has something to say. They claim Flamengo haven’t received any offers for Cuellar. They are actually expecting some after the Copa America, which will be a big showcase for him. That’s when they will offer the player a contract extension to try to convince him to stay.

One of the arguments used by Flamengo to keep the midfielder will ironically be the situation of a West Ham player. Since Carlos Sanchez could never play for a top European side, they will try to show Cuellar that playing in Europe isn’t a guarantee that you will fight for big things.
