Despite being touted by certain members of the press on this side of the Channel, the chances of Florian Thauvin swapping Marseille for either West Ham or Leicester City aren’t high.
This is what La Provence are reporting on Friday following the French side’s 2-1 friendly loss to Accrington Stanley, in which the World Cup winner scored, explaining that while the winger does want to leave, it won’t be for either the Hammers or the Foxes.
By far the Ligue 1 side’s most consistent and best player over the past couple of seasons, the former Newcastle flop, should he leave, wants to go to a team ‘playing in the top roles’ of a league.
That means a club fighting for titles and playing in the Champions League, which neither West Ham nor Leicester are doing these days.
The local newspaper describe the links to both clubs as ‘mirages’ suggesting they aren’t really there, which is all well and good for Thauvin, since it’s made clear he wouldn’t go there anyway.
After all, he’s already tried the ‘fighting mid-table in the Premier League’ route with the Magpies, and that didn’t work out too well for him.
He was younger then, and has developed a lot since, but there’s no denying it will have left its mark.
