Athletic Club Bilbao are working hard on extending the contract of Unai Núñez, as reported by Spanish outlet El Correo.
Following the good season the defender is having for the La Liga side, they’re trying to protect him with a new deal and avoid clubs from taking him for his release clause.
One of the potential bidders are West Ham United. El Correo writes that the Premier League side were interested in signing the 23-year-old in the summer, but didn’t want to pay the €30m price tag.
Now with the lack of a new contract, it’s claimed that Athletic fans are afraid that any club could just show up in the summer and take him for that amount.
Interviewed by El Correo, Athletic director Rafa Alkorta has claimed that he ‘doesn’t fear’ that Núñez could leave the club by triggering his release clause, but admits that the possibility exists. Especially because this is the third offer they’ve made to him.
“But it can happen. All I know is that he has three more contract years and that if someone comes with the 30 million, he’ll have to decide whether to stay or leave. We can’t do more than we are doing. I insist: three offers and I think with very reasonable numbers.”
One for West Ham to keep an eye on.
