Reece Oxford will play for Borussia Monchengladbach next season, and there’s already pressure building in Germany.

Dubbed a ‘Super-Bubi’ by the German media, the West Ham owned player is being set up as something of a wonderkid, and the 18 year old is expected to fill the space vacated by Andreas Christensen.

When the Oxford to Gladbach rumours started at the beginning of June, it was made very clear in Germany that he’d be brought in to replace Christensen, who is returning to Chelsea at the end of a two year loan.

Gladbach even wanted West Ham to agree to a two year deal for Oxford, but they’ve had to make do with a single season.

It’s no exaggeration to say that during his two years in Germany, Christensen, who turned 21 years of age in April, has been one of the best young defensive players in the Bundesliga. He’s also impressed beyond his years, and if Gladbach thought they could afford it, they’ve have jumped at the chance to make the move permanent.

Bild once again compare Oxford to Christensen on Tuesday, with the West Ham player passing his medical to join Gladbach, and the German club’s general manager Max Eberl is convinced the youngster can replace the departing Dane.

It’s a huge ask, Christensen was a great success, and whilst there’s every chance Oxford can do the same, the expectation is perhaps a little too much.
