Following the many rumours about Newcastle United and West Ham United interest in Flamengo forward Gabriel Barbosa, we get to see interesting updates coming from the Brazilian media today.
Globo Esporte journalist Cahê Mota managed to get some information on the approaches made by Premier League clubs for the 25-year-old recently.
It’s said West Ham were the first to make a move, submitting an official bid at the start of December. That was an offer of €6m for a loan until the summer of 2023, plus an option to buy.
According to the report, Flamengo considered the proposal ‘absurd’ and have ‘not even opened negotiations’, as for what Gabigol represents to the club today, the amount was ‘derisory’.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have also ‘made contact’ for the signing. They spoke to Gabigol’s staff to know the conditions of a potential deal, and had the response that Flamengo would only accept to let him go on a permanent transfer.
There’s now said to be an ‘expectation’ from the Rio de Janeiro side regarding new bids from the Magpies or Hammers. There was also an approach from Fenerbahce, which was taken by the Brazilian club with irony, as the Turkish side wouldn’t be able to afford the move.
Gabigol, who has 84 goals in 124 appearances for Flamengo, is protected by a release clause worth €33m, and that’s how much the club want to let him go.
