West Ham are one of the Premier League clubs who are often watching random Portuguese league matches, especially those without Sporting, Benfica or Porto involved.
This time, as reported by A Bola, the London side had emissaries in Guimarães, where they watched a league tie between Moreirense and Rio Ave.
In not a surprising result, the away side managed to win the game 1-0, continuing their pursuit for an Europa League spot, while Moreirense stayed on the bottom of the table.
The Portuguese press doesn’t mention any target who the West Ham scouts could be watching, so maybe the officials were just taking a look to see if any player could impress.
For Moreirense, left-back Ruben Lima and midfielder Boubacar were those praised by the local press, as they showed more will to get a positive result than the rest of the team. For the away side, midfielder Bressan, who scored the winner, and defender Domingos Duarte were those responsible for the solid performance.
Borussia Dortmund, Deportivo La Coruña, Sporting Gijón, West Brom, Caen, Lens and Sparta Prague were the other clubs who sent scouts to this game.
Should West Ham find a target at either of the clubs on show, they’d be much cheaper than at bigger Portuguese clubs.
