West Ham United are today pointed out as one of the clubs in the race to sign Benfica midfielder Julian Weigl.
The information is shared by Portuguese newspaper Record, who features an update on the player’s situation with the Eagles.
The outlet makes it clear that Benfica are ready to sell Weigl, as long as a satisfying bid arrives. The initial amount set for the transfer is said to be €15m, and even though the Lisbon side would like to make more with performance bonuses, it won’t take more than a total of €20m to sign him.
Record lists several clubs who have made approaches for the midfielder lately. Those are said to be West Ham, Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hertha Berlin, Milan and Atalanta.
It’s said the interested clubs have ‘asked’ about his situation at Benfica, but there is no indication who may be leading the race for him.
It’s also pointed out the salary Weigl earns at Benfica is the main reason why no clubs haven’t yet tabled an official offer.
We are pretty sure West Ham would be able to cover it, and it’s more likely to be an issue for clubs outside of the Premier League, but that’s just our guess.
