West Ham United are in the picture to sign Arsenal’s Konstantinos Mavropanos in the next window.
The defender joined VfB Stuttgart on a loan deal in 2020 and last summer, his temporary stay with them was extended for one more season with an option to buy.
Mavropanos’ displays for the Bundesliga side have not gone unnoticed in England, with West Ham United named as one of the clubs to have ‘registered their interest’ in him.
That’s according to Bild, who state Stuttgart have an option to make the 24-year-old’s stay permanent by paying a ‘bargain price’ of €3.5m to Arsenal.
With David Moyes’ side interested in the Greece international, the report says West Ham United would offer around €20m to the German club to buy their ‘mentality monster’.
The centre-back, for his part, can imagine a future at Stuttgart and will only think of leaving them if a ‘top club gets serious’ for him. Bild doesn’t state whether the player views the Hammers as a ‘top club’.
“Stuttgart have the option to sign me. If they do that, I’m a VfB player. That’s all there is to say about that at the moment,” he told Bild.
Operating mainly in the heart of the defence, Mavropanos has five goals and an assist to his name from 31 matches in all competitions this term.
Stuttgart are currently 16th [relegation play-offs place] in the table, three points behind 15th place Hertha Berlin with one game left to play this season.
If the former win their next tie and Berlin end up losing, then Stuttgart will be safe. If not, they will have to win the relegation play-offs to secure their place in the Bundesliga next season.
A drop to second division may improve West Ham’s chances of securing Mavropanos’s services. Either way, that €20m figure seems way too high.
