West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberán has insisted his ‘long-term objective’ is to get the Baggies back to the Premier League.

The West Brom manager has been speaking to Plaza Deportiva about his career so far, and his plans for his current club moving forwards.

The Spanish manager joined the Baggies in October 2022 and last season led them from bottom of the Championship table to tenth in the table, having at one point challenge for a promotion place.

This season they sit fifth in the table after 31 games, although only four points separate them from Norwich, Hull and Preston in 7th, 8th and 9th respectively meaning the battle to secure a play-off spot at least is very much on.

Getting back to the Premier League is naturally the aim for the club, who have now been out of the top flight for two years following relegation in 2021.

West Brom had spent two years in the Championship before that season following relegation in 2018, which brought an end to an eight-year spell in the Premier League that once saw them finish 8th.

They very much believe they belong in that division rather than the second flight and it seems Carlos Corberán shares that idea.

“In this new season the situation is financially delicate,” he said.

“We are immersed in a process of selling the club that has not allowed us to manoeuvre in the market, but despite the fact that the economic reality is harsh, the team is in a play-off position. We are fifth. In this category, the first two go up directly and the rest play the play-off for third place.

“I have a contract until 2027. Generally, the biggest long-term objective is promotion to the Premier League. My dream is to return a historic club that has 145 years of history.

“Historically, it has been a Premier club, but the realities are not related to the limitations. I try to ensure that reality improves the team’s real possibilities and that limitations do not mark us.

“And that’s what we are doing, trying to demonstrate and do everything possible to achieve victory. And to win through our team and game identity.”
