On Friday, we relayed news from Belgium that Gent’s director of football had slapped a €20m price tag on West Brom target Moses Simon, who used Dutch transfers as an example to follow for Belgian sides.
The likes of Memphis Depay and Vincent Janssen left for England in high-profile transfers, and with Wilfred Ndidi costing Leicester around £15m from Genk, the question was ‘why should Simon leave for less than €20m’?
Such a price could put off more than one club, but for Premier League sides like the Baggies, it certainly remains an affordable option, especially if they intend to improve on this season’s successful campaign.
As for whether he is worth that much, the winger himself reacted to his director of football’s comments when asked about it by OwnGoalNigeria.
Speaking to the website, Simon said: “€20m, am I that expensive? We’ll find out in the coming days either from my club or agent. My job is to play football. There are people who handle that aspect of my career.”
Whether the player meant that a bid could land on Gent’s desk ‘in the coming days’ remains to be seen, but it certainly seems like Moses Simon is considering looking elsewhere if his agent or club are expected to comment on the situation soon.
The 21-year-old has scored five goals and picked up seven assists in 41 appearances for the Jupiler Pro League side this season.
