West Brom winger Oliver Burke has been presented this week by Spanish side Alavés, where he’s spending one year on loan.
There’s a lot of expectation around the 22-year-old, since he’s about to become the first British player to ever play for the club’s first team.
Alavés president Alfonso Fernandez de Troconiz attended the press conference, and had a little to say about the signing.
“For us it’s a pride, the arrival of a footballer who has played in many British historical teams and who, despite having other offers, has decided for ours,” said Troconiz (via AS).
Burke himself has spoken too, showing how glad he is with the move: “It’s a great opportunity for me to sign for Alavés. I’m very happy, the club has made me feel very good from day one.”
The loanee also spoke about Spanish football, saying they have the best league in the world.
“I don’t know much about fans here in Spain, this is my first opportunity here. I’ve been told that the fans are wonderful, the stadium is full and they press from the stands. I like the pitch and what I have is desire to go out and play. La Liga is the best league in the world, with a very high level of football, teams and players, there are the best players and teams.
“When I was younger they always compare you to other more veteran players, they compared me to Gareth Bale, but he’s on another level. I want to make my way, I’m Oliver Burke, I’m going to work hard and I hope to succeed here at Alavés.”
Burke joined West Brom in a €15m move from RB Leipzig in 2015. He played for the Baggies for one and a half seasons, and in January, was loaned to Celtic, returning this summer.
Now getting a little experience from Spanish football, perhaps he’ll soon be able to help West Brom again.
