During the January transfer window, West Brom and Sunderland were two of the clubs linked with a move for Ishak Belfodil. The Algerian striker is having a good season in Belgium and Premier League interest made sense.
Belfodil has been on the verge of a transfer to Everton but everything got very messy and the deal collapsed, leading to public arguments in Belgium afterwards. After the transfer collapsed, Belfodil signed a new contract with Standard, but that doesn’t mean he has a long term future at the club.
Belgium’s DH report on Friday that Belfodil will be leaving Standard in the summer transfer window, leading the club to look at replacements.
West Brom will likely hold the advantage over Sunderland in the summer, considering the club’s comparative league positions. With Sunderland rooted to the bottom, and West Brom riding high in 8th, it would be an easy choice for the Algerian.
There are more clubs interested but West Brom presents an interesting opportunity for Belfodil. The 25 year old has long been considered very talented but hasn’t always turned that talent into performances. There are few better stages than the Premier League, and it will be no surprise if Belfodil rocks up in England during the next transfer window.
Standard are likely to ask for a fee around €10m.
