Borussia Mönchengladbach took Ramy Bensebaini from Rennes last summer and injuries have stopped the 24-year-old featuring regularly this season.
The Algeria international first arrived in Europe when Belgian side Lierse took him on loan for the 2014/15 season. The following season, Bensebaini was on loan at Montpellier and then moved to Rennes on a permanent transfer in 2016.
Prior to this, the player underwent a trial with Arsenal in 2013 and after spending a month at the north London club, he convinced the Gunners.
The Premier League side were keen on acquiring Bensebaini’s services, but the deal never materialised. Bensebaini gave an interview to Sport Buzzer, in which he explained the reason behind his failed move to the Emirates.
“I trained there with the first team for a month and they were also ready to offer me a contract,” he said.
“At the time, it failed because of the rules in England. The clubs can only hire players from abroad who have played a certain number of international matches. I didn’t meet it [the criteria] then.”
Bensebaini has been largely used as a left-back at Mönchengladbach, but he can operate as a centre-back and defensive midfielder.
