Not completely forgotten by Arsenal despite being on loan for the past season and a bit, Wojcech Szczesny is still part of Wenger’s plans, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Replaced by Petr Cech, the Polish goalkeeper was sent to Roma for the 2015-16 season, and renewed his loan for the current campaign.

Corriere explain the Arsenal loanee was sent back to the Italian capital with the promise that he would be a regular for the 2017-18 campaign at the Premier League club, but that could change if Roma get their way.

The player has improved drastically at the Italian side since his arrival a year and a half ago, ‘finding a consistency he never previously had’, and Roma, ideally, would like to keep him.

Corriere say the problem in all of this isn’t the wages (despite Gazzetta claiming that yesterday), it’s actually the price Arsenal are currently asking for him, which, at €16m, is a bit steep, considering they spent €8m on Alisson last summer to provide Szczesny with some healthy competition.

As for the player himself, the 27-year-old ‘has never hidden his desire to return as the main protagonist in London, but he’s very happy in Rome, and would like to win before he leaves’.

There’s little doubt Szczesny, if given the choice, would prefer to return to London to become Arsenal’s number one, but a lot of that rests on Petr Cech’s future.

Considering no one really knows when the Czech goalkeeper’s contract runs out (Transfermarkt say 2019), he might have to wait a little longer, by which time the prospect of staying at Roma might be a more favourable one.
