We remember the coverage we made of Rangers’ transfer window in the summer of 2017. With the arrival of Pedro Caixinha to the club, they were linked to several players from Mexico, with the local press loving all the rumours.

There was a big expectation around many transfers, especially the one of Carlos ‘Gullit’ Peña, who was a Chivas star at the time, and joined the Scottish side in a €3m deal.

But things didn’t work out well for him in Glasgow since Caixinha’s departure in October, and that’s why in January, he was sent back to Mexico to Cruz Azul on a loan deal.

He stayed there for six months, and instead of returning to Rangers this summer, and working under Steven Gerrard, he’s joined Necaxa on a new loan.

He couldn’t do well at Necaxa either. With only nine appearances, and his loan spell has now ended at the Mexican side. The departure is surrounded by some rumours about attitude problems he’s had at the club.

That’s why Peña has recorded a video explaining the situation, thanking the club and claiming that he ‘will see’ what will be of his future once he returns to Rangers.

“This video is to thank Club Necaxa for all the support they gave me, all its people, the president, Mario Lash, Martin Salcedo, Michael Leaño, all the players and all the staff that is in this great institution, very grateful, very happy with everyone,” said Peña.

“Some things that some journalists have said are totally false, I leave here very well, I am very happy, very grateful to all this institution, with all their love and for now I’m back to Rangers, we’ll see in a few days what happens. I send a hug to all the people who support me.”

Now it’s down to those in charge at Ibrox, and specifically Steven Gerrard, to decide what to do with their player.
