After spending two seasons on loan with lower division sides Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale, Robert Sánchez got his big breakthrough at Brighton & Hove Albion during the 2020/21 campaign.

Since starting against Fulham last December, the goalkeeper maintained his place in the first team and finished the season with 27 league starts.

The 23-year-old’s form for the Seagulls helped him make his debut for Spain in March and he’s now been selected by Luis Enrique for Euro 2020. A month prior to that, Graham Potter’s side offered him a new contract and his current deal now runs down in 2025.

Ahead of the preparation for the continental tournament, Spanish newspaper AS caught up with the Brighton custodian.

Sánchez left Levante to join the Premier League side’s academy in 2013. Asked if he’s willing to return to his home country, the keeper said: “I’ve always liked the Premier League. And I just made my debut at Brighton, I have a four-year contract…”

When further pressed what he would do if he receives a ‘call’ from Real Madrid supremo Florentino Pérez, Sánchez explained: “We will have to talk, right?” What comes will come. Right now, I’m concentrating on the European championship and then we’ll see.”
