Aston Villa have their eyes set on Celta Vigo’s Óscar Mingueza to improve their defence in the winter market.

On Tuesday, La Voz de Galicia reported the La Liga side are calm because the right-back is comfortable at the club and in the city.

Later that day, journalist Víctor López stated Aston Villa haven’t fully decided on the 25-year-old and ‘downplayed’ their interest.

El Desmarque provides a different take on Celta and the Villans’ stance on Mingueza and it could please the English club’s supporters.

The former Barcelona man’s deal lasts until 2026, and includes a €20m release clause that’s affordable for the Premier League sides that are keen on signing him. Aston Villa are one of them and are the team to have shown ‘most interest’ in the fullback.

Barca will receive 50% of the fee from the defender’s sale and Celta are aware both Hansi Flick’s side and Mingueza’s agent are looking for a January transfer.

“We can only prepare in case it happens,” responded Celta to multiple rumours around the player’s future.

The Spanish club are clear they won’t negotiate, and Aston Villa haven’t yet approached them for Mingueza. They will only let him leave if his clause is activated and the report states Celta ‘fear’ Aston Villa will trigger it.

Celta’s desire is to offer the fullback a new deal, but they could lose him to Unai Emery’s side in January.
