AaB Fodbold wanted to sign Manchester United defender Victor Lindelöf when he was at Benfica.
That’s according to their former manager, Kent Nielsen after revealing this during an interview with Tipsbladet.
The centre-back joined the Portuguese club from Västerås SK in 2012 and was initially part of their reserve team. He eventually made the step up to their first team and his performances earned the 30-year-old secure a move to Manchester United in 2017
Nielsen opened up to the Danish media outlet about the failed attempt to sign the Manchester United player when he was coaching AaB.
“We were in Portugal on a training camp with AaB when I was the coach there. We played a training match where we played one half against Benfica’s first team and then one half against Benfica’s U23 team, who play in the second tier,” he said.
“It’s very funny because we played, what’s his name, Victor Lindelöf. He was playing in their second-best team at the time. Afterwards, we asked about him to see if there was an opportunity to bring him in. Then a season and a half passed, and then he moved to Manchester United.”
Lindelöf is in his final year of contract with the Red Devisl, but he’s yet to make an appearance for the English side this season due to injury.
The Swede has now returned to training, but could find his chances limited due to the defensive arrivals at Old Trafford during the summer.
