Ahead of Manchester City’s match against Inter Milan this evening, Rodri was put forward by the Premier League champions at a press conference.
One of the questions put to the midfielder was on whether he and others have considered going on strike in protest at the number of matches they have to play. The theme has been rising recently, with comments from a number of players about there being too much football in the calendar.
Rather than work with their managers to arrange the rest they want during the season, some players want something firmer doing to reduce the overall matches.
That’s generally been met with a lot of understanding, although there’s clearly the issue that less matches would mean less money coming into the game and it could therefore impact salaries.
Atletico Madrid’s José María Giménez appears to have a different view to Rodri, seemingly believing the Manchester City player went a bit too far with his comments.
Quoted by AS, the Uruguayan said: “We are players. We are not the ones who manage the issue of schedules. They tell us when to play, we put on our socks, our shoes and we go in. It is reality and we cannot say anything about it. We should not make that decision. Whoever makes it will do so in consideration of what is being talked about a lot.”
