Thomas Vermaelen is, via his representatives, looking for a club in the Premier League, reports Mundo Deportivo on Monday.
The 33 year old has a contract with Barcelona which ends in June and whilst previous technical secretary Robert Fernandez had wanted to extend the deal by a further year, repeat issues with injuries have ended that plan.
The Catalan newspaper says they’ve been able to confirm that those guiding the former Arsenal player’s career are focusing their initial efforts on a move to England’s top flight.
Just two clubs are mentioned: Watford and Southampton.
Whilst it’s not stated that direct contact has been made with the Hornets or Saints yet, it’s stated they’ve been interested previously so the line of thinking would be they’d be tried again.
It’s a gamble which could pay off, and maybe Watford or Southampton would listen. Should there be no joy in the Premier League, then Mundo Deportivo report other countries will be tried.
