Watford managed to beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium last night, and a big part of this victory should be credited to Heurelho Gomes.
The 35-year-old former Tottenham player had a fantastic performance, with crucial saves that allowed the Hornets to keep an advantage after opening up a 2-0 lead.
Gomes spoke to ESPN Brasil after the game, and hailed the team’s effort after getting the three points: “I had the opportunity to play here a few times for Tottenham, and I know the difficulty to play here. Last year, we won here for the cup too, and the feeling is very good because we know it will give us a much greater energy for the rest of the league.”
“And as I say, goalkeepers must win points, and that’s what I try to do all the games for Watford. Because we know we can’t financially compete with the big ones, but we compete in determination because I think everyone is trying for the same objective.”
But Gomes knows these could be the final years of his career, even though he takes the example from other goalkeepers who played as much as possible: “There will come a moment I’ll have to say. No matter the form, we already feel those little pains from age.
“But Rogério [Ceni] played until over 40, we have experience, Brad Friedel here in England, Dida… so today, I think football allows that. The preparation is different, I take care of myself very well, so let’s see. Let’s see where it goes, I put this in God’s hands for him to guide my career.”
This is Gomes’ third season at Watford, after joining the Hornets from Tottenham Hotspur on a free deal back in 2014. With almost 250 appearances in England, he turned out to be one of the most successful Brazilian players to feature in the Premier League.
