During transfer deadline day, Le10 Sport in France reported that Watford and Newcastle had made approaches for Lille’s Thiago Maia.
We took the story with a pinch of salt, mostly because this isn’t the first time they’ve claimed interest in the past, only for local newspaper La Voix du Nord to discredit them a few hours later.
However, it appears, this time, there might have been something in it, as the aforementioned newspaper corroborates the information, confirming both the Hornets and the Magpies made approaches for the Brazilian.
Watford came with a transfer off, although the amount isn’t revealed, but Maia wasn’t too keen on the project they were offering.
As for Newcastle, Rafa Benitez’s side asked Lille if they would be interested in a loan with an obligation to buy for the 21-year-old, only to be met with a resounding no from the Ligue 1 side.
A third club is said to have also made an offer, although their name hasn’t been revealed, and their desire was to sign him next summer.
