Brought to England for the first time by West Ham in 2008, Valon Behrami returned for a second spell in England two years ago when Watford handed him a three-year deal in a £3m move from HSV.
However, the Swiss international might not be there next season to see off his contract, with a move to Switzerland already in the works.
Speaking to Blick in his home country, the 32-year-old said: “I would rather play at a club in Switzerland or closer to Switzerland, because I would like to live with my family in Lugano.”
The player explained that he has already let those in charge at Vicarage Road know about his change of plans, yet isn’t trying to force a move out as ‘they will decide how to proceed’.
Behrami said he would accept any decision made by the club, even if they asked him to stay on until the end of his contract.
As for his next destination? “We talked with Sion. It’s quite serious. It would be a challenge anyway. I’ve never played in the Super League.”
At 32, the Watford defensive midfielder knows his next contract will probably be his last, which is why ‘the step must be well thought out’.
Since joining the Hornets, Behrami has made 49 appearances in all competitions, picking up just one assist.
