Watford defender Dimitri Foulquier says he made ‘a choice of heart’ when he chose to head back to Granada in January.

The right-back re-joined his former club on loan until the end of the season in the January transfer window after finding game time hard to come by at Vicarage Road.

The Frenchman had returned to Watford from a loan spell at Getafe last season but managed just five appearances in all competitions.

He’s since managed 14 appearances on his loan spell with Granada and says he feels ‘appreciated’ at the club.

“I didn’t play from August to December in Watford,” he told France Football.

“I had a complicated six months. I had other offers. I came here. I made a choice of heart.

“It’s a club I know very well, where I feel appreciated, where I’d been a captain in the past.

“When I had the opportunity to come here, it was a good opportunity for me.”

The last three years have been very inconsistent for Foulquier, who has played for no fewer than three clubs in that time.

After joining Watford in 2017, he spent a year on loan at Strasbourg, as well as last year at Getafe and now this loan deal with Granada.

He’s now settled at his current club and says he wants to now take a long view to his career, something his current club are hoping to grant him if Watford will allow it.

“Yes, that’s the desire. It’s the desire of the club too. We’re going to try to make it happen,” he added.

“I was looking for stability. I came here to find it. I’m trying to perform in every game. In my career, if the highest level in my career is where I am right now, that’ll be it.

“If it’s higher, it’ll just be higher, that’s all. I don’t get it in my head. I have to continue to progress.

“I’ve had my best seasons in La Liga. I’ve had some good times here and at Getafe. It’s a Championship that I appreciate.

“The mentality, the way of looking at football. I like the way the games are approaching. I’m not saying it’s better, but I prefer it.”
