While the Premier League is among the most competitive in the world, if not the most competitive, it does not stop the odd occasional huge scoreline.
This season we’ve already been treated to two, with Southampton recently destroyed 9-0 by Leicester City and Watford suffering an 8-0 defeat to Manchester City before that.
For the Hornets, it was a particularly bitter blow, especially given only fourth months previously City had put six past them in the FA Cup final.
The result is one they are still struggling to recover from, although goalkeeper coach Emilio López says they can’t afford to keep thinking about.
“They are accidents,” he told Atlántico.
“A bad game does not come back; there is no need to turn it over. Just learn from mistakes so that they do not happen again.
“We celebrated (when Ben Foster kept a clean sheet two games later), and the City result was more than forgotten.”
The situation has not improved for Watford since that defeat to Manchester City, with the Hornets still without a win after ten games of the season.
There have been improved performances in recent weeks, though, draws with Arsenal and Tottenham standing out in particular.
López says Watford deserved more from both games, and that has been the case for most of this disappointing season so far.
“The Premier League is spectacular in every way”, he added.
“Both the Arsenal and Tottenham games we deserved something more – both matches ended in draws.
“We have come up with the right system, the work is good, and the results will come.”
