On Tuesday we covered claims from Belgium that Watford are interested in signing Thomas Vermaelen from Barcelona.
Currently on loan with AS Roma, Vermaelen hasn’t been first choice, but has been a used member of the squad. The 31 year old is a long way from the status which saw him as Arsenal captain, and subsequently signed by Barcelona.
Now the Catalan club are looking to sell, and Spanish newspaper Sport report Barcelona would be willing to accept €8m for a player who has 2 years left on his contract after the current season.
That would fit in with Watford interest nicely, but the Premier League club could likely talk the price down. There will continue to be worries over Vermaelen’s fitness, Barcelona see no future for him, and they want rid of his wages.
As long as Watford face no serious competition for the Belgian defender, then going in somewhere around the €6m mark could lead to success.
