Watford have managed only one win in the league in 16 matches and are currently sitting at the bottom of the table with nine points, six points behind 17th placed Aston Villa.

The Hornets sacked Javi Gracia and appointed their former manager Quique Sánchez Flores as his successor in September. However, results didn’t improve and the English side let go of him earlier this month.

On December 6th, the Vicarage Road club confirmed they’d appointed Nigel Pearson as their new boss and he will take charge of the club when Watford face Liverpool.

According to Calciomercato, Pearson was not Watford’s first choice managerial target as they had approached Esteban Cambiasso less than a week ago.

The former Leicester City midfielder is fluent in three languages. It’s claimed this aspect would have influenced Watford executives to hire him.

However, Cambiasso, who has no coaching experience yet, turned down Watford and the report states it’s ‘unclear’ why he rejected the Hornets.
