When Rafa Mir moved from Valencia to Wolves it didn’t go down universally well in the Spanish media. There were suggestions the young striker was moving for financial reasons, looking for a big English pay day earlier than he should have.
Real Madrid were also keen on signing the youngster and there were contradicting claims from media closest to the Spanish clubs involved, it was all a little more fractious than it probably needed to be.
Mir was pushed away from Valencia first team contention because he wouldn’t sign a renewal, and eventually moved to Wolves in the January 2018 transfer window. With huge struggle ahead of him to get into Nuno Espirito Santo’s team this season, Mir went out on loan to Segunda club Las Palmas.
On claims of asking for a big financial package from Valencia, Mir said: “No, in the end you know how it is, many people think without knowing the full story. We talked to the club, we wanted confidence from the club and we did not see it. The option to go out was activated and that’s what happened.”
The 21 year old doesn’t rule out returning to Valencia at some point in his career, and it may be fitting so that the story’s ending can be a little brighter next time.
