On May 23rd, Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili said his future will be sorted out soon after Newcastle United showed interest in him. That hasn’t happened so far and the Magpies are looking at other options in the market.
Plaza Deportiva provide insight into why the 23-year-old won’t be moving to Newcastle in the summer window.
When he gave an interview last month, one of his agents made him aware of Newcastle’s interest, and this was why the stopper ‘was convinced’ his exit was imminent.
Newcastle’s offer was €25m plus bonuses and this didn’t please Valencia owner Peter Lim, who is requesting at least €35m (it’s been put at €40m+ previously) for his first-choice goalkeeper.
The Georgia international was also ‘dissatisfied’ with the Premier League side’s proposal. He wants to leave Los Ches for another club to play regularly, and Newcastle officials didn’t promise him that he’ll be their No.1 stopper.
Plaza Deportiva say this ‘upset’ Mamardashvili, and they add that he wasn’t attracted by the project and offer proposed by Eddie Howe’s side. In short, he ‘wasn’t convinced’ to leave the Spanish club for Newcastle.
The Georgian now has to focus on the Euros and hope his performances will be enough to attract a top European team.
